What time? Is there anything I should prepare?” Her question seeks useful information. If no details arrive before she leaves, she can note the meeting and return to her plans. Feedback on her work remains possible; she will then have specific information to respond to.

That evening, Sophie still notices her worry. She can remind herself of the question she has already asked and wait for the meeting, without sending repeated messages to obtain a certainty that nobody can provide at that moment.

A specific question can help you seek missing information.

Your free guide

A guide to noticing your reactions

The Quick Emotional Check-In includes a self-check, a trigger journal and worksheets for planning a concrete next step. Try being specific: “I’m afraid of losing my team’s trust” or “I’m worried I won’t know how to answer.” These words give a clearer meaning to your discomfort.

Then allow yourself a short pause that fits your work: rest your hands, look around and let a few moments pass before writing. In a conversation, you can say: “Let me take a moment to think.” You give yourself time to choose your words.

The emotion may remain during the exchange. You can still ask a question, request an example or explain that you will come back with a specific answer. A useful conversation remains possible while you are feeling nervous.

Malik has made a real mistake

Malik sent a quote with an outdated delivery date. The client points it out. His first thought is immediate: “Now everyone will think I’m incompetent.” There is a concrete problem; his conclusion about his professional worth goes much further than the available facts.

He can acknowledge his embarrassment and prepare a response: “I used a date that was no longer current. I’ll check availability with the workshop and send you a corrected quote before 2 p.m.” He chooses a deadline he can meet and informs his manager if the situation calls for it.

Once the correction is complete, he examines what contributed to the mistake: several versions of the document were circulating. He suggests keeping templates in one location and checking the delivery date before each quote is sent. His attention turns toward consequences he can address and an improvement he can observe.

Malik may receive criticism. He can listen for the specific point, ask what is expected and agree on a follow-up. A comment such as “the date needs checking before the quote goes out” identifies an action. Turning it into “I’m worthless” adds a judgment that does little to help him handle the file.

Claire waits for a response to her suggestion

During a meeting, Claire suggests changing how new clients are welcomed. Nobody answers immediately. A colleague looks at their notes. She thinks: “My idea is ridiculous. I should have stayed quiet.” She considers withdrawing her suggestion before anyone has discussed it.

Claire can describe the situation differently: “I’ve presented an idea and haven’t had feedback yet.” She feels uncomfortable and would like to know how to proceed. She asks: “Which part would be useful to discuss?” or “Would you prefer me to send an example after the meeting?”

If the discussion needs to wait, she can agree on a time for feedback. The uncertainty may not disappear immediately. Her idea might be accepted, modified or set aside. She has opened a conversation about the work ahead while giving her colleagues room to share their views.

What I observe

What I assume

A useful question

A meeting has been requested.

I’m going to be criticized.

What should I prepare?

A mistake has been identified.

They will never trust me again.

What needs correcting?

My suggestion has no reply yet.

My idea has been rejected.

When can we discuss it again?

Fictional examples for returning to information you can check.

Four questions to try in your notebook

Choose a recent situation with moderate stakes.
